2022 IRS TAX REFUND UPDATE - Refunds Scheduled, Delays, Refund Status Error Message, IRS Notices
4:37 - 2 years ago
On today's IRS Tax Refund update we will take a look at the latest developments this tax season including the scheduled release ...
Check Your Return or Refund Status | Department of Taxes
The Department will begin processing returns in February. Returns are held until the Department receives W-2 withholding reports from employers, which are due on Feb. 1. The Department needs to have W-2s from employers so that we may verify taxpayer information. This helps us ensure the right amount of tax is paid or refunded and helps us detect fraudulent returns.
To claim a refund of Vermont withholding or estimated tax payments, you must file a Form IN-111, Vermont Income Tax Return. You have up to three years from the due date of the return, including extensions, to file a claim for overpayment of tax due.
If the information on your return does not match the information available to the Department, your refund may be delayed. The Department may be waiting for information from your employer or the IRS for data verification. If we need additional information from you before issuing your refund, we will contact you in writing with instructions on how to respond either online through myVTax or in writing.
If you chose direct deposit for your refund, you may see your refund a few days after your status has been updated to “We’ve released your refund.” Your financial institution may have additional processing times. If you chose to receive your refund by check, then it may take a few weeks to receive your refund by mail.
Although we try to process your refund within the timeframes stated above, it may take longer due to our rigorous fraud detection procedures. Each year, the Department detects new schemes to commit tax refund fraud, and our staff works hard to stop criminals from stealing your refund.

Roughly six million Illinois residents are eyeing the arrival of income and property tax rebates, and state sen. Celina Villanueva is urging those who are waiting to check the status of their rebates.
In the meantime, the senator said recipients can check where their rebates stand online. Those who still need to submit their forms have less than a month left to do so.
Under Gov. J.B. Pritzker's Illinois Family Relief Plan, which was approved in April, one-time individual income tax and property tax rebates are now being issued to those who meet certain criteria.
“The Illinois Family Relief Plan continues to fight inflation and lower costs for the people of our state during these challenging economic times,” Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton said in a statement. “Income and tax rebates are on the way to ease the burden and provide support to families throughout the state. Our administration cares and will continue to do all it can to make Illinois one of the best states in the nation to live.”
The income tax rebate calls for a single person to receive $50, while those who file taxes jointly are poised to receive a total of $100, Mendoza's office said in a news release. Residents with dependents will receive a rebate of up to $300 -- $100 per dependent, with a maximum of three.

Starting this month, qualified California residents will begin to receive one-time inflation-relief payments of as much as $1,050. Whether you're eligible for the Middle Class Tax Refund -- and how much you could receive-- depends on your income, residency, filing status and household size.
The refunds are part of a $12 billion relief effort approved this summer by state lawmakers. The plan "prioritizes getting dollars back into the pockets of millions of Californians who are grappling with global inflation and rising prices" Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a June 26 statement.
Roughly 23 million California residents are eligible for the rebate plan, which has been set up in three tiers based on the adjusted gross income on your 2020 California state tax return. In addition to meeting income requirements, residents must have filed their 2020 tax refund by Oct. 15, 2021, have lived in the state of California for at least half of the 2020 tax year and still be California residents on the date the payment is issued. You also cannot have been claimed as a dependent by someone else in the 2020 tax year.

Depending on your income and your tax filing status, you could receive anywhere between $200 and $1050 if you filed a state tax return in 2020 and still live in California. The state said most of the direct deposits will be sent by the end of October. If you filed a paper state tax return, you’ll be sent a debit card in the mail. Those should be mailed beginning in October, and the first will arrive between Oct. 7 and Oct. 25. The last payments should be received by eligible Californians by January.

During the federal student loan payment pause, I kept making payments. Now, with forgiveness possible, I decided to request a refund -- and after five days of calling, my refund was approved. But now, my forgiveness situation is a little more complicated.
I thought taking advantage of the temporary 0% interest rates so I could chip away at my graduate school debt was a smart move during the payment pause. I didn't anticipate that student loan relief for graduate school debt would be included in President Joe Biden's recent forgiveness plans. (Here's what to know about applying for the student loan debt forgiveness.)
So to my surprise, because I received a Pell Grant, I will now receive up to $20,000 in relief. Great news. But in order to maximize forgiveness, I now have to take a few more steps to request a refund and raise my student loan balance. The biggest issue for borrowers in my position is making sure to receive your refund before applying for forgiveness; otherwise, you might have to request forgiveness twice.
In order to receive maximum forgiveness, I first needed to request a refund for part of the money I paid during the pandemic -- and experts say it pays to do this soon. That would bring my balance back up to my full forgiveness amount of $20,000.

President-elect Trump has promised to impose steep new taxes on trade, including a 10-20 percent tariff on all imports, at least a 60 percent tariff on Chinese imports, and a 25-100 percent tariff on Mexican imports. At least a dozen estimates on Trump’s proposed tariffs show they will have a harmful effect on the American economy, supporting the standard view among economists that tariffs reduce trade and distort production, leading to lower standards of living.

The clear election victory for Republicans means they will retake the White House, Senate, and (by a slim margin) the House next year, putting them in the driver’s seat to determine the direction of tax reform. Despite what people thought at first, the years of the pandemic were good for state and local tax collections. The big jumps in 2021 and 2022 haven't carried over into 2023, but most states' earnings are still strong and well above levels before the pandemic, even when inflation is taken into account.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) changes more than 60 tax rules every year to account for inflation. This stops something called "bracket creep."
