How do you calculate federal income tax withholding?
To calculate withholding tax, you’ll need the following information:
- Your employees’ W-4 forms
- Each employee’s gross pay for the pay period
- The IRS income tax withholding tables and tax calculator for the current year
What percent of taxes are withheld?
“Withholding” refers to an employer’s responsibility to pay each employee’s estimated income tax, by directing a percentage of gross taxable wages to the government tax office rather than paying it directly to the employee. For state income taxes, Arizona offers seven withholding percentage options: 0.8% 1.3% 1.8% 2.7% 3.6% 4.2% 5.1%
How to determine correct federal withholding?
- Filing status: Either the single rate or the lower married rate.
- Number of withholding allowances claimed: Each allowance claimed reduces the amount withheld.
- Additional withholding: An employee can request an additional amount to be withheld from each paycheck.
How much should I have withheld from my paycheck?
Withhold half of the total (7.65% = 6.2% for Social Security plus 1.45% for Medicare) from the employee's paycheck. For the employee above, with $1,500 in weekly pay, the calculation is $1,500 x 7.65% (.0765) for a total of $114.75.
