Who is considered an eligible tax dependent?
Dependents are either a qualifying child or a qualifying relative of the taxpayer. The taxpayer’s spouse cannot be claimed as a dependent. Some examples of dependents include a child, stepchild, brother, sister, or parent. Individuals who qualify to be claimed as a dependent may be required to file a tax return if they meet the filing requirements.
How much money can a dependent make?
If the dependent is under 19 or under 24 and a fulltime student, there is no maximum. The issue is whether the child paid more than 1/2 his or her own support. So, if this dependent made $160,000 but spent it all on video games and bubble gum, he or she could still be your dependent because the child did NOT provided his/her own support.
