Whether your tax deadline has been extended or you are already late, you should file your tax return as soon as possible.
Most Americans had to file their taxes by April 18, but that doesn't mean your return is automatically late. Some Americans who have been hurt by things like wind storms, tornadoes, and wildfires have until May 16 or June 15 to get help. And if you filed for an extension on your taxes on time, you have until October 15 to finish and send in your return.
If you don't have an extension and are already behind on your taxes for 2021, you should file your return as soon as possible. If you're due a tax refund, you'll lose the money, and if you owe the IRS, you'll get more fines and interest.
No matter how much time you have, there's no good reason to put something off. The best tax software of 2022 will be able to handle any problem that the IRS throws at it and give you the most money back or at least the right amount that you owe.
This year, our list of the best tax software includes TurboTax, H&R Block, Cash App Taxes, Jackson Hewitt, TaxSlayer, TaxAct, and FreeTaxUSA. Read on to find out more about their features, how they work, and how much they cost so you can decide which one might be best for you.
Best tax software
TurboTax by Intuit
Best tax software for most people
The clear winner is TurboTax by Intuit, and for good reason. The software has an easy-to-use interface and is made by people who know a lot about taxes.
TurboTax helps you fill out your tax return with ease by not asking you for information you've already given or that doesn't apply to your tax situation. When questions come up, it doesn't take long to find the answers.
There are four different types of TurboTax products: Basic, Deluxe, Premier, and Self-Employed. If your taxes are even a little bit complicated, we recommend the $78 Deluxe level for most people. If you know you don't qualify for most deductions or credits, though, you can stick with the free Basic level.
Expert help from TurboTax Live and TurboTax Audit Defense can be added to any of the TurboTax products. TurboTax costs more than other tax software because it has more features, but it could be worth it if it gives you peace of mind.

H&R Block
Best tax software, runner-up
H&R Block is comparable to our top pick, TurboTax, and its Free Online version shines. It handles simple returns and deductions for student loans and tuition fees, making it a great choice for people who don't have complicated tax situations but want tax breaks for school.
Even though H&R Block isn't as easy to use as TurboTax, it has a good interview-style system that helps users avoid making mistakes. Help screens and FAQs have a lot of information, but they are not as easy to find.
Online Assist from H&R Block is an add-on that costs $40 for Free Online and Deluxe and $60 for Premium and Self-Employed. It gives you virtual tax help from a professional online, and you can even share your screen to show where you're stuck.
You can quickly send your W-2 to H&R Block by taking a picture of it with your phone. Its online software also lets you upload files like multiple 1099 forms, schedules A and C, gifts to charity, and medical expenses, among other things.
One of the best things about H&R Block is that it has real offices. If you decide halfway through your online tax return that you'd rather not do it yourself, H&R Block has about 9,000 offices across the US where you can make an appointment or drop off your taxes for a professional to finish.

Cash App Taxes
Best free tax software
Cash App Taxes, which used to be called Credit Karma Tax, is making its debut this tax season with a free way to do your taxes that doesn't skimp on IRS forms and schedules. It lets people file one federal and one state tax return for free, with guarantees of accuracy and getting the most money back.
Some users might not want to use the service because they can't import files and have to use an unusual desktop login process. However, once you're in the software, it works like most programs: Information about your tax situation is collected through a simple interview-style process and used to fill out IRS forms.
Because you have to enter your information by hand, Cash App Taxes is best for people who only need to fill out a few forms and have simple tax situations. Cash App Taxes also has rules that could keep some taxpayers from using it: No filing taxes in more than one state, no income from other countries, and no option to file separately if you are married in a community property state like California or Texas.
Cash App Taxes also doesn't have professional tax help, so it's best for people who are sure they can do their own taxes. The software also needs the Cash App mobile app to be installed on a tablet or phone. People who have already used the payment service and have the app installed should take a look.
Pricing
Free
TaxSlayer
Best for freelancers and self-employed
TaxSlayer offers simple tax preparation at reasonable prices, and its full-featured software will attract filers on a tight budget. Its free version may be too limited for most users, but the top Self-Employed tier costs much less than competitors and comes with tax advice from a pro who knows about self-employment.
TaxSlayer has four levels of service that range from free to $48. These are called Simply Free, Classic, Premium, and Self-Employed. Simply Free is only for people who have a taxable income of less than $100,000 and comes with one free state return. On the other paid levels of TaxSlayer, each state return costs $37.
The best plan for freelancers and gig workers is TaxSlayer's Self-Employed tier, which costs $85 for both federal and state tax returns and includes help with tax preparation from a tax pro who knows about self-employment taxes.
TaxSlayer's user interface and help content may not be as polished as those of its top competitors, but its low prices for self-employed filers make it a good choice for people who are comfortable doing their own taxes.

Jackson Hewitt Online
Best value
Even though Jackson Hewitt isn't as easy to use or flashy as TurboTax or H&R Block, $25 for one federal return and unlimited state returns is hard to beat. Most of Jackson Hewitt's competitors offer different levels of service based on how complicated your taxes are. Jackson Hewitt Online, on the other hand, only has one price, no matter how complicated your taxes are.
Jackson Hewitt Online offers free help with IRS audits and a Lifetime Accuracy Guarantee® to protect you from penalties or interest that you didn't expect. Its basic service does have some downsides, though. Its website isn't as good as those of its competitors. You can't upload files or tax forms, and it doesn't offer much help.
Jackson Hewitt Online also lets you "file online with a tax pro" for $99. Self-service tax preparation costs $25. You start your online tax return, connect with a tax professional, and then upload the rest of your IRS forms and paperwork so the agent can finish your tax return.
And if you want more one-on-one help, you can file at a participating Walmart starting at $59 or go to one of its offices to file with a tax pro (prices vary depending on your filing situation and state of residence).
Pricing

TaxAct
Best accuracy guarantee
TaxAct makes it easy to do your income taxes. What makes it stand out is its $100,000 Accuracy Guarantee and Maximum Refund Guarantee, which promise to get you an accurate refund and the most money you are legally allowed to get back. If it doesn't, TaxAct will give you a refund of up to $100,000 to cover the difference between your actual and possible refund, the cost of your software, and any legal or audit costs that come along with it.
TaxAct doesn't have as many features as its top competitors, but it offers similar services at a lower price. Its best feature is a Deduction Maximizer that looks over your tax return to see if you missed any possible tax deductions. The professional tax help service Xpert Assist from TaxAct is also free for people who file their taxes before March 31, 2022.

FreeTaxUSA
Lowest cost tax software
FreeTaxUSA is mostly free, but if you need to file state taxes, you'll have to pay. It lets you import tax returns from the past and file an amended tax return. The Deluxe version has priority live chat, customer support, and access to its tax specialists and audit service. These tax experts should be able to answer all of your questions about your income tax return, from what paperwork you need to how to understand an audit notice and write the IRS a response.

FAQs
Can I file my taxes for free? What's the catch?
You can do your taxes for free in two main ways. The first way is through the "File Free" program of the IRS. Private companies work with the IRS to offer their services for free. To get in, your adjusted gross income must be less than $72,000.
The second way is to use free programs from companies that are not part of the alliance, such as TurboTax and H&R Block. These private services offer free products for people who have simple tax situations. As long as you don't have complicated things like income from investments or rental properties, you can stick with the free products the whole way through filing.
Keep in mind, though, that Intuit and other companies will often try to sell you more products as you go along. Make sure you need a higher-tier product that you didn't plan on getting before you sign up for it.
Which tax software is free? (Is it really free?)
Almost all of the best choices for tax software in 2022 have free options for simple tax returns. But some of these free options only let you file your federal tax return. If you also need to file your state tax return, you may have to pay extra.
TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxSlayer, and Cash App Taxes all offer free tax filing services that include one federal tax return and one state tax return. TaxAct's free plan costs $40 per state tax return, while FreeTaxUSA's basic plan is free for federal and $15 for unlimited state returns.
Before you start using any of the free tax software, make sure you know if there are any restrictions. For example, TurboTax's Basic plan only lets you file simple tax returns with 1040 forms. You can't report unemployment income, stock sales, or itemized deductions like mortgage interest. H&R Block's Free Online adds a few more forms, like Schedules 1 and 3, but you still have to take the standard deduction. TaxSlayer Simply Free doesn't let you report more than $100,000 in taxable income.
Even Cash App Taxes, which won CNET's award for Best Free Tax Software, doesn't cover all tax situations. It does include advanced tax forms for self-employment, rental property, stock sales, small business income, and the child care credit, but it doesn't allow for foreign earned income, the health coverage tax credit, or income from an estate or trust (Form K-1).
When are taxes due this year?
On Friday, April 18, 2022, the federal tax return for 2021 is due. The 15th of April is Emancipation Day in Washington, DC. Patriots' Day is on April 18, so people in Massachusetts and Maine get an extra day. Their tax returns are due on April 19, not April 18.
Some people who live in areas hit by natural disasters in Colorado, Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee have until May 16 to file their taxes. On the IRS disaster relief page, you can find a list of the counties that get the extra time.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the filing deadlines were not pushed back in 2022 like they were the year before. We'll let you know if there are any changes to tax deadlines this year.
What is a 'simple' tax return?
A simple tax return is one that only includes one W-2 from an employer. With a simple return, you won't be claiming itemized deductions, income from investments or rental property, income from freelancing, or business expenses like a home office.
Companies like Intuit and H&R Block list the added complexity of their more expensive products, so if you're not sure, check their lists again before buying. You can also start by filing a free return, and if you need to, you can upgrade your service level.
When should I pay extra to get live assistance from online tax software?
The beauty of well-designed tax software is that most filers won't need to pay extra for expert help. All of the answers you need should only be a few clicks away, and if you need technical assistance (help with the software, not tax-related issues), support should be easily accessible.
If you find yourself constantly wanting to speak with a human tax expert or if you know your tax situation is complicated, you may be better off selecting tax software with tax expert support or simply hiring a CPA, or certified public accountant, on your own.
How much does it cost to hire a CPA? Is it worth it?
The National Society of Accountants' 2020-21 Fees Practices Survey says that working with a CPA to file your taxes will cost $200 to $500, depending on how complicated your return is and how many schedules and extra forms need to be filled out, as well as where you live. Each extra schedule, for things like rental income or investment gains, could cost around $100.
If you have income from self-employment, itemized deductions, investments, or other complicated tax situations, the extra cost is likely to be worth it. It can also be easier to send your forms to a professional and know that they will handle everything. Don't forget that the extra money you're paying in fees could get you a better return, making the cost you have to pay up front a good investment.
Keep in mind, though, that it depends a lot on how you file your taxes, how much you withhold, and what tax bracket you are in. Even though many software programs are good, it's often best to go with a human expert.
Methodology: How we select the best tax software
CNET looks at tax software by comparing it to a set of standards. We use the software to make personal tax returns, look at the terms and offers of tax products, talk to software representatives to get answers to questions about products, compare feature sets, and look at how well the software works in common tax situations.
We look at the features and functions of the tax preparation software, how easy it is to use, how the software works, how well the website works, how good the help and support is, and how much value you get for your money. We are also looking for and evaluating certain features, such as the ability to import files or take photos of forms, the number and types of IRS forms and schedules that are available, contextual help, desktop and phone/tablet compatibility and syncing, professional tax help, accuracy and maximum refund guarantees, live support, and security features.

There is no cost to you for electronic check (eCheck) payments. Your Unsecured Property Tax Bill contains your Roll Year, Bill Number, and Personal Identification Number (PIN), which you will need to complete the transaction. Each PIN is unique to each Roll Year and Bill Number. Ensure you use the PIN that corresponds to each tax bill. Each eCheck transaction is limited to $999,999.99.
When paying by eCheck, your bank account must be Automated Clearing House (ACH)-enabled, meaning the transaction can settle through the ACH Network. If your bank account has a debit block to prevent unauthorized organizations from debiting your account via ACH, you must notify your bank to authorize ACH debits from Los Angeles County with a debit filter with the Company Identification Number of 0 0 0 0 0 7 9 1 6 1. Los Angeles County updated its Company Identification Number in September 2018, so you must update this Company Identification Number if you previously had a debit filter on your bank account.
We accept major credit card and debit card payments. Please note that when making online credit or debit card payments for your current year Unsecured (Personal) Property Taxes, you will need your Personal Identification Number (PIN) on your Unsecured Property Tax Bill. Each PIN is unique to each Roll Year and Bill Number. Ensure you use the PIN that corresponds to each tax bill. Retain the confirmation number for future reference. Each online credit/debit card transaction is limited to $99,999.99, including a service fee of 2.22 percent of the transaction amount (minimum $1.49 per transaction).
If you do not have your original Unsecured Property Tax Bill, please email us at [email protected]. Be sure to list your Roll Year and Bill Number and use the phrase “Copy of Original Unsecured Bill” in the subject line of the email. The Five Best Online Tax Preparation & Filing Services for 2022 | Expensivity
Good news. It’s tax season…again. Seems like it happens practically every year, doesn’t it? Whether you’re preparing to owe the government a few bucks, you’re anticipating a nice return, or you’re ultimately expecting a neutral outcome, the fact of the matter is that taxes are rarely fun. They can be complicated and confusing and a little stressful. From gathering your documents and calculating your expenses to navigating the tangled web of rules, regulations, liabilities, credits, deductions, and penalties, there’s a lot to figure out.
That’s where a good tax preparation software program can come into play. The internet is home to countless tax preparation services, whose ultimate purpose is to guide you through the process of filing your taxes while helping you maximize your outcomes and avoid potentially costly mistakes. But there’s a lot riding on your taxes. So how can you be sure you’re using a reputable service with a strong track record for getting good outcomes on behalf of its users?
Well, we’ve done some of the legwork for you. We’ve scoured the web in search of tax preparation services that can help ease the process of filing for you this year. And full disclosure, this author has employed one or two of the tax preparation services in the past and the results have generally been positive (and considerably more affordable than consultation with a live human tax advisor).
Tax preparation software refers to a wide range of online services designed to help you e-file your federal and state taxes, usually in exchange for a modest fee. Most services offer a sliding fee scale based on the suite of services required by each user. But in the simplest terms, online tax preparation makes what was once an extremely obfuscating task a great deal easier for the average filer.
Of course, In the old days, doing your taxes by yourself involved a lot of hand-written forms, calculators, number crunching, and scrutinizing of the intricate rules applying to your unique situation. Whether that situation made you a 9-to-5 employee, a self-employed freelancer, a small business owner, an independent contractor with a tight crew of also independently contracted craftsmen, or a middle class family who just bought a house and started a college fund, you had to do it all by hand.

Maine Revenue Services (MRS) has scheduled live online training for businesses and tax professionals on how to use the Maine Tax Portal, Maine’s new online tax administration system coming Dec. 1, 2022 for a selected group of business taxes and programs. Businesses and tax professionals should visit Maine.gov/Revenue/Portal to sign up for a training session to learn how and when to use the Maine Tax Portal. Multiple sessions are available now through Dec. 15, 2022.
The Maine Tax Portal modernizes Maine’s current tax administration systems to make it faster, easier, and more convenient for taxpayers to file, pay, and manage Maine taxes. The Maine Tax Portal also replaces MRS’s current online services (i-File, MEETRS, and EZ Pay) and expands online functionality.
“Since Maine first began offering online tax services, technology has advanced, and many other states and municipalities have modernized their tax systems,” said Kirsten Figueroa, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS), in a news release. “Previously, Maine’s online tax services were limited to a select few tax types. With the Maine Tax Portal, filing, paying, and managing state taxes will be faster, easier, more convenient, and more accessible for all.”
The dates when taxpayers and tax professionals can start using the Maine Tax Portal depend on the tax type or program. Beginning December 1, 2022, the Maine Tax Portal will be rolled out to a second group of taxes and programs, including but not limited to business taxes, such as Sales, Use, Service Provider and Income Tax Withholding. The Maine Tax Portal will be rolled out for all Maine tax types and programs by the end of 2024. The rollout schedule is available at Maine.gov/Revenue/Portal.
Resources, training videos, and other information about the Maine Tax Portal can be found online at Maine.gov/Revenue/Portal. Questions may be sent by emailing [email protected] with “MTP” in the subject line or by calling MRS at (207) 624-9784 between 9 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday, state holidays excepted.

Despite what people thought at first, the years of the pandemic were good for state and local tax collections. The big jumps in 2021 and 2022 haven't carried over into 2023, but most states' earnings are still strong and well above levels before the pandemic, even when inflation is taken into account.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) changes more than 60 tax rules every year to account for inflation. This stops something called "bracket creep." People move into higher tax brackets or lose value from credits and benefits when inflation rises instead of their real income rising. This is called "bracket creep."
Early property taxes were generally paid by farmers and were imposed mostly on land throughout the medieval era. These days, property taxes are also imposed on assets such as real estate, and they are paid periodically by individuals or organizations.
Interest rates are predicted to go down as inflation goes down, but the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says that the government's interest costs will almost double over the next ten years, reaching 3.6% of GDP in 2033.
As the race for president in 2024 gets under way, candidates are starting to make plans for how they would handle taxes. Getting the government corporate tax rate down from 21% to 15% is a tax plan that both former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence supported.
A lot of new information about a draft multilateral tax deal was made public by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) last week. The dump of documents has to do with OECD Pillar 1, Amount A, which is a plan to change where big multinational businesses pay taxes on their profits.
For many years, the European Union (EU) has been trying to make a single business tax base. The European Commission's recent 'Business in Europe: Framework for Income Taxation' (BEFIT) proposal and two related proposals on transfer pricing are the next steps in its legislative efforts to make the CCTB (common corporate tax base) and CCCTB (common consolidated corporate tax base) proposals law.
This week, we released our yearly State Business Tax Climate Index, which looks at how taxes are set up. Readers can compare state tax systems across more than 120 factors, making it a very useful diagnostic tool.
Prices that are marked up by a certain amount may not be taxed, but buyers still feel like they are. A clause added at the last minute to Pennsylvania bill HB 1300 would raise the minimum markup on cigarettes sold in the state.
