Road tax grace period extendedFriday, 04 Sep 2020Fielding the press: Dr Wee speaking during a press conference after the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Putrajaya.PUTRAJAYA: Any road tax that has not been paid for not more than 36 months can now be renewed without having the vehicle inspected at Puspakom, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. However, this is only applicable to private vehicles and does not cover commercial vehicles such as buses, lorries and e-hailing vehicles.“We have been getting a lot of requests from people suffering from hardship during the Covid-19 pandemic, so we made a decision that those whose road tax has expired Between 1 and 3 years can renew it, ” he said. The Transport Minister revealed this during a press conference after witnessing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing for a strategic collaboration programme between the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Department of Skills Development under the Human Resources Ministry yesterday.[size=9]Prior to his announcement, vehicle owners are only given a grace period of up to a year before needing to undergo vehicle inspection if they want to renew their road tax.To date, there are 4.274 million vehicles that have expired road tax of between 1 and 3 years.Dr Wee also announced an extension of the 70% discount on JPJ summonses until the end of this month after the initial offer lapsed on Aug 31.“We found that many are unable to renew their licences because they have been blacklisted for not paying their summonses.“Many are looking for jobs and some want to work with e-hailing or food delivery companies, but they need the licence, so we are extending the discount period.“But this is also a lesson because if they are wrong, they still need to pay, ” he said. The discount is given to all compoundable summonses issued by JPJ, the Land Public Transport Commission (now Land Public Transport Agency) for offences under the Road Transport Act and the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act, and other rules and orders under it.However, this discount offer is not applicable to summonses issued by the police. On a separate issue, Dr Wee said there should be dedicated lanes for motorcyclists to ensure their safety, though this is dependent on government finances. He said having a dedicated lane for motorcyclists requires additional road space and financial allocations, which is under the Works Ministry.Separately, Dr Wee hoped that the strategic collaboration under the MoU would produce JPJ officers with high order thinking skills, agile, possess digital capabilities, creative, and are able to think out of the box.The collaboration is part of long-term plans by JPJ to further enhance its workforce.Dr Wee said improving the performance of the public sector had always been the development agenda of the nation as this would produce an efficient civil service.Anyone know when is this rule scheduled to last at ???now is 2021,let said a car that is expired at 2017,so now is 4 years.Cannot renew???why no put a deadline??This post has been edited by plouffle0789: Apr 15 2021, 04:33 PM
04 Sep 2020 Those with expired road tax not exceeding 3 years can renew without Puspakom check, minister confirms It was reported earlier this week that private cars and motorcycles with road tax that has expired for a period of no more than three years will be able to renew their road tax without having to undergo a Puspakom inspection, beginning today. This has now been confirmed by transport minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.Wee said the government made the decision after taking into account vehicle owners’ requests for a relaxation as some faced financial constraints in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that based on records, there are more than 4.27 million vehicles with expired road tax of within one to three years.“Vehicle owners whose road tax expires in less than three years or 36 months can continue to make renewals,” he said yesterday at a press conference after witnessing the signing of a strategic collaboration programme between the JPJ, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Department of Skills Development in Putrajaya, reported by Bernama. The original grace period for an expired road tax before the Puspakom inspection is mandatory is one year.Anyone know this rule until when???
I had try couple weeks ago. U can buy roadtax late without need to extend insurance. It will follow yr insurance expiry date.It seem JPJ can back date to tally with insurance now.
