The more income an individual earns, the smaller the personal exemption amount available. Lower-income workers qualify for a higher personal exemption amount. For example, taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of more than $80,000 can claim a personal exemption of $1,850. Taxpayers with an AGI less than $40,000 can claim an exemption of $2,350. Those with an AGI of more than $40,000 but less than $80,000 can claim $2,100.
