A guide to Arashiyama, Kyoto: land of poets and - photo opportunities

This article is part of a guide to Tokyo from FT Globetrotter
Although a little outside the city, Arashiyama is one of Kyoto’s top tourist destinations, well worth exploring for its lovely walks dotted with historic temples and gardens, as well as one of Japan’s most famous and iconic bridges. It also happens to be a mecca of Japanese classical literature.
Taking in a mountain, a river and a bamboo forest, Arashiyama is worth visiting in all seasons. In spring and autumn especially, crowds of young Japanese and Asian couples flock to the area dressed in rented polyester kimonos and walk around hand in hand, looking for the perfect photo or video opportunities for their Instagram accounts.
